The Ergon SM Women MTB Saddle combines power, comfort, and freedom of movement in a saddle specifically engineered for female anatomy. After intensive research including X-ray and CT analysis, Ergon created a completely new approach to women’s mountain bike saddles. Women’s-Specific Anatomical Design
Ergon’s development team discovered that women’s pelvic anatomy requires fundamentally different saddle design compared to men. Simply making a men’s saddle wider or adding a cutout doesn’t address the root anatomical differences that cause discomfort.
Forward-Rocked Pelvic Position
Women’s increased pelvic and hip flexibility means they tend to rock forward more than men when mountain biking. This anatomical characteristic creates considerable pressure in the genital area on standard saddles designed for male anatomy or unisex applications.
The SM Women’s design specifically supports women’s wider sit bones whilst accommodating the forward-rocked position. The shape distributes pressure to bony structures (sit bones and parts of the pubic arch) rather than concentrating it on sensitive soft tissue. Lower Pubic Symphysis
Anatomically, the pubic symphysis (anterior cartilage connection between the two pelvic halves) sits approximately 25% lower in women than men. Additionally, the angle of the pubic bones to each other is larger in women.
The SM Women accounts for these structural differences. The saddle shape positions support zones to work with lower pubic symphysis positioning rather than creating pressure on this sensitive cartilage connection. The tapering is crucial. Rather than a uniform-width cutout, the channel tapers to match pressure distribution patterns specific to women’s forward-rocked pelvic position. This precision engineering ensures relief exactly where needed without creating pressure edges where relief meets support zones.
The relief channel allows body weight to distribute more towards the sit bones whilst enabling comfortable, pressure-free forward-rocked positioning. This design eliminates the numbness, pain, and discomfort that plague women using standard or men’s saddles.
Optimal Pressure Distribution
The SM Women’s pressure distribution strategy specifically addresses female anatomy. The flat saddle surface allows weight to shift to the sit bones (ischial tuberosities) rather than concentrating on soft tissue. CroMo Rails
Chromoly (CroMo) steel rails provide reliable mounting and durability. The 7mm diameter rails fit standard seatpost clamps found on most bikes. CroMo offers excellent strength-to-weight ratio—significantly stronger than standard steel whilst remaining more economical than titanium or carbon.

Microfibre Cover
The microfibre cover material provides durable, comfortable surface characteristics. Microfibre resists abrasion whilst offering pleasant contact feel. The material doesn’t require break-in like leather and maintains appearance through regular use.
Microfibre also resists water absorption, preventing the saddle from becoming waterlogged during wet rides. This characteristic maintains consistent weight and prevents the soggy, uncomfortable feel of water-saturated materials.
